14-12-2016

DUBAI // Hsieh Su-Wei, the only seeded player to make it beyond the first round, needed only 70 minutes on Wednesday to book her place in the last eight of the Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge.

Hsieh, who climbed to a career-best No 23 in the WTA rankings in early 2013, put her experience to great use, dismissing Dutch qualifier Quirine Lemoine 6-1, 6-4 to set up a quarter-final clash with Serbian Aleksandra Krunic.

Krunic, who reached the fourth round of the 2014 US Open, defeated Ksenia Pervak, the Russian who ousted top seed and defending champion Cagla Buyukakcay, 6-4, 7-6(4) on Tuesday.

Uzbekistan’s Sabina Sharipova is also through to the last eight, defeating compatriot Abduraimova Nigina 6-4, 6-3. She next meets Dutch qualifier Lesley Kerkhove, who cruised past Slovenia’s Tadeja Majeric 6-2, 6-2.

Mona Barthel, the former world No 23 from Germany, will take on Serbian Ivana Jorovic in the quarter-finals on Wednesday after battling through for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over compatriot Nina Stojanovic. Jorovic defeated Olesya Pervushina 6-4, 6-3.

In the fourth quarter-final, wildcard Galina Voskoboeva will take on Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva. Voskoboeva edged Austrian Barbara Haas 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, while Vikhlyantseva fought back to down Dalma Galfi 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
